I watched MR for several years on EE before hearing her natural voice (which I first heard in an interview after she had been cast for BW). I was quite surprised at the difference. In this week’s eppie of BW, she let out a very typical EE exclamation..”oy”. I had a flashback when I heard that.

“Eastenders” is the polar opposite of American soaps, where even the ugliest of the women are hot as pistols.

I’ve been addicted to EE for 16 years, but I can’t watch an American soap for 10 minutes. There’s just a completely different approach. American soaps are about beautiful people leading tortured lives in the pursuit of money, power, and sex. British soaps (those that I’ve seen) portray “ordinary” neighbourhoods and the characters that inhabit them. Money and sex are still motivating factors, but there is less emphasis on statuesque blonds and studly power-broker-type men. They also tend to center around the neighbourhood pub (or “local” as they call it).

“Eastenders” is a generally good-natured soap that tends to make you feel like you could live comfortably among the residents of Walford and never be short of good “mates”, including the lovely (but dressed down) Zoe Slater (Michelle) and her spirited clan. Try getting that feeling on “Young & The Restless”.

As far as Jaime speaking with a British accent from now on, I would love it, but they hae already spilled the beans on her back story and saddled her with an American sister, making any reversion to her natural accent a real stretch in credibility. Maybe they felt it would be easier to cast her sister and eventually, perhaps, her father, if she were to sound like an American. Who knows, but it is certainly regrettable.

Whilst we’re on the subject of “Eastenders”, Michelle is not the first EE cast member that Katee Sackhoff has worked with lately. Earlier this year, she co-starred with Craig Fairbrass in “White Noise 2″. Fairbrass played bad-boy Dan Sullivan on EE for a couple years. He was just leaving about the time that Michelle was arriving.

Agree with you about UK and America Soaps..the approach is very different. Eastenders can be dreary at times but over the last couple of years they have made the show more ‘comedic’ and light hearted. Re: Jaime’s accent, there doesn’t appear to be an acceptable way to have her speak in an English accent for the long term, which as you say is a shame because I bet they’re kicking themselves over not making her English in the first place. Though what you said about casting the rest of her family was perhaps one motivator against it.
