Man this is absolutely awful and why I hate unions. Everyone is supporting the writers, but it’s just propaganda. Some of the writers are paid well aren’t they? Which is why Eric Kripke and Joss Whedon probably are only supporting the strike because they have to. We lose 6 or seven episodes of Supernatural and Smallville because they want more money. Don’t writers have contracts with shows and get paid for each episode they write? Does anyone know how much they make an episode? Why should they get DVD residuals honestly? Can anyone shed some light on this?

From what I read, it’s because the producers get money from DVDs so they want some too, but last time I checked writers don’t have anything to do with the production of a DVD unless they’re on it you know? Once they hand in their scripts, they can move on. If anything, they should be paid more upfront. I’m sorry if I come off as heartless but I’m just pissed off. I never understood strikes…everyone loses money and then you have to spend time just getting out of the hole you’ve dug yourself into. And nobody can deny that going on strike during November sweeps is underhanded, yes that’s the point I know, but thinking of people striking reminds me of children who won’t do something unless their parents give them what they want. It’s sort of pathetic.

Oh and the crew people are underpaid. They should be the ones striking. The writers don’t even care that they are putting people out of work and costing everyone money. Also, they are costing the devoted fans episodes of their favourite programs. The producers are selfish probably but don’t say you would just agree to the writers’ demands, once you make one million a year you’re not going to give it away unless absolutely necessary. I think the writers are being selfish as well though, it takes two people to argue after all.

I think strikes are a waste of time, and quite often, striking workers have the better paying (unionized)jobs in the nation’s workforce to begin with. Auto workers going on strike is one that always kills me.

With the US Dollar crashing through the floorboards on a daily basis, what they should do is ask for a 5% nominal cut in pay with the stipulation that they be paid in a foreign (i.e. Canadian) currency instead of pounding the pavement in hopes of getting “more” falling US dollars.

Kel - Personally I do think that the writers have a right to receive fair pay. Also I think the writers are making a stand now because they know that the way TV is viewed is changing..and in 4 or 5 years most people will watch online or via Tivo etc..therefore ‘hollywood’ will tae further advantage and screw the writers out of even more money. Of course you’re right that they are striking now to hit the industry at a vulnerable point in the season. You do make a point and the strike will have a negative knock on effect and cause many others to go completely unpaid - such as caterers, camera technicians etc. Hopefully the writers and the studios can get together and sort something out because at the moment no-one is benefitting.
