I agree with your review, it was great episode and a great step in the right direction for the show. Michelle Ryan is coming into her own in the role and she should keep her british accent, she has more presence with it and she has more personality as well.

I never understood why NBC insisted on MR speaking “American” in the first place. James Bond has had a glorious 4+ decade career without faking an American accent. Everyone loved Julian Sark on “Alias” and they had him fake a British accent (continued now on “Heroes).

I’ve been banging away on other blogs about this annoying baddie-of-the-week format. It has to go. It’s bad enough that we have self-contained eppies, but at least have a rival organization that carries over from one week to the next. Can anyone say “Alias”? SD6, The Alliance, Prophet Five, K-Directorate. We’re 5 eppies in and I don’t think we’ve actually put a name to a bad guy. In the pilot we saw EuroTrash guy tell Anthros senior, “we have a lot of work to do”. We haven’t seen him since.

Bad guy of the week is so retro, so “Simon and Simon”, so 70′s. C’mon, guys, throw us a bone.

Will and Jaime had zero chemistry, agreed. In fact, Will was 15 years older than Jaime (9 years older in the pre-air pilot), and he was boring as hell. He needed killing.

Here’s something that doesn’t work for me. Last week, Jaime left Antonio unconscious in Paraguay. This week, no mention of Antonio’s incident with Jaime, no sore ribs, no tension between Antonio and Jaime over the Paraguay incident. And, no concern at all about the missing flash drive. Last week, they risked dying for it, this week, it’s not on the radar. I hate episodic TV.

I’m with you on the Ruth issue. Why did they even cast a “Ruth”. She doesn’t do anything. Ditto for Jae, who was absent this week, but doesn’t do anything except spar with Jaime and shag Sarah (but, boy, can he twitch those face muscles?). What kept Jae employed at Burket before Jaime came along?? Was he the janitor Sarah referred a few weeks ago?

The show is making headway, there’s no doubt about it, but it’s not running at 30% of what I hoped for. Can they get it up and running in time to save it from the axe? Hope so.

Definitely one of the best episodes yet, well written, nicely paced and just really enjoyable to watch.
Loved hearing Michelle use her natural accent (I’m english too and it makes a nice change to hear a real english accent in an american show).
The only thing that bothered me was that it seemed like this was an episode that had been moved from earlier in the series, as there was little or no connection to events in last weeks show. Jaime only having 5 years to live wasn’t mentioned and she seemed perfectly okay with working alongside Antonio again, despite their conflict in the previous episode. It felt like chronologically this should have been episode 3 instead of episode 5.
But anyway, it was an excellent episode and I feel like the show is improving with every week.

This is my first comment here so I’ll also say that I really like this site, you’re doing a great job so keep up the good work!

Fred – I agree, she has alot more presence with her natural accent, I just hope they find a way for her to use it more often without making the previous episodes look silly.

Page48 – Good point about James Bond. I wonder whether it even crossed their minds to make Jaime ‘British’ from the outset or whether it was something that Ryan or the producers suggested they ‘test-run’ at a later date? As for the ‘bad guy’ set-up that they have, it really does have to change! I also agree that they need to have a look at the formula of the episodes. I’m not a massive fan of the ‘standalone episode’ format (though perhaps this latest episode made no reference to the previous one because it was originally scheduled to be aired before “Fall Out”?) Eitherway they need to sort out the continuity issues and build upon the better episodes (1, 3 & 5). I really hope people are patient with the show though.

Bionic Bob – Yeah it was perhaps my favourite episode so far (along with Sisterhood) and I totally agree with you in that it seemed like this episode should have come earlier in the season. I’m pretty sure that they reshuffeled “Paradise Lost” and melded it with “Birds”, so perhaps we’re on to something. But yes, a very enjoyable episode and I’m looking forward to the next one, which sounds even better! Thanks Bob, I appreciate that and I’m glad you like the site!

One further note regarding faking accents. There have been numerous articles on the internet this season about the trend toward American TV execs tapping British actors for lead roles, and in most cases, faking American accents.

“Sarah Connor Chronicles” will star Lena Headley faking an American accent, but in her case, she is stepping into Linda Hamilton’s role, rather than doing a “re-imagining” of the whole Sarah Connor story.

I was surprised to see a behind-the-scenes look at “Brothers & Sisters” and learn that 2 of the Walker siblings have foreign accents. But, again, they’re rolls require an American accent because they are portraying siblings in an American family.

Not so with Michelle Ryan and BW. She is not reprising Lindsay Wagner’s role, she is playing a brand new BW with a similar (Jamie/Jaime) name. There is no need for her to be an American to appeal to American audiences. In fact, I think North Americans are generally quite willing to embrace a British character, whether it’s James Bond or Austin Powers, and in fact, probably find a nice British accent quite exotic and appealing rather than something that needs fixing.

The fight scenes are a drain to the show; they should be left out for the most part. If this was a show about a female Walker Texas Ranger or something like that, that would be fine, but not for the Bionic Woman. I want to see things unique to a bionic woman, not just a martial arts trained woman. It makes me feel bad for the men she fights because they must get really hurt when hit by her and I do not think that is Jamie’s intention. Let her hurt a piece of metal, not a human body.

Great points Page48, totally agree with you, especially on BW being a ‘re-imagining’, which as you say means that the show doesn’t have to (nor should it necessarily look to, imo) borrow from the 1970′s Bionic Woman. Making the BW British from the start would have been a brave but ultimately successful move I think. Of course it takes more than an accent to make a character appealing, but I think this would have been one of ‘several’ alterations I would make to Jaime, if given the chance.

Hey Jim,I hear what you’re saying. Personally have mixed feelings over the fight scenes. Sometimes I think they’re stupid, especially when she fights ‘humans’ and they get back up after she sends them through a wall or something! But on the other hand I think that it’s useful for her to face ‘non-supers’ as well as bionic people (Corvus) as this might help her to differentiate between her ‘human side’ and her ‘machine side’. For instance, does she use a ‘softer’ fighting style when fighting humans? Maybe she is learning to control the two forces which now drive her? Oh, one thing that does bug me is the one battle per episode quota that seems to exist (perhaps this is also what you’re referring to Jim?)..I know fighting is a big aspect of the show, but they could try to mix it up a bit couldn’t they? Like perhaps one week Jaime could face psychological challenges as opposed to physical ones?
