I thought it would be interesting to explore the central themes of the show as we progress through the series. One theme which is evident in episode 1, is Love.

In particular we find out that Jae Lee and Sarah Corvus were once in a relationship. After she kills the Burket Scientists, she asks him to say that he loves her, then she attacks him and he executes her, after emotionally telling her “I love you”. But let’s go back a moment..did Sarah REALLY kill those people? Afterall she seems very distressed and even told Jae that she “didn’t want to” and that she ’wasn’t in control’. Furthermore as she lunges for him, she cries “Nooo!!”, as if she wasn’t the one attacking him, if you catch my drift? This suggests to me that ‘perhaps’ someone else was in control of her actions..perhaps someone else ‘made’ her kill those scientists by hacking into her Bionic implants? Indeed, edora poses this very question.

What is also interesting is that when Sarah has the chance to exact revenge on Jae for ‘killing her’, she doesn’t..instead after she shoots Will, she let’s Jae go. How does this conflict with her earlier statement:
“I’m cutting away all of the parts of me that are weak”
The above suggests that Sarah is embracing her machine side and removing all of the weak ‘human’ parts. But does this include emotions..Love?
I think that however much she is trying to remove the pain of what Jae and others have done to her, she still has enough love..enough ‘humanity’ to draw the line by not killing Jae when she had the chance.
What does this tell us about the nature of machine vs love? Perhaps there is hope for Jaime yet..perhaps she will get to choose..
What are your thoughts on the above? ..i’d love to hear them.
