Anyone know why the overnight ratings have not come out yet for 1.08? Usually they have been reported 48 hours after the show, and we are well beyond that now.

I could be wrong, but by judging what other shows did that night, those numbers do not appear encouraging. But, NBC has not said anything, so we should not give up yet.
I just wanted to say something else, too. I did not discover this blog till midway through the season and so for fun today, I glanced through the blog all the way back to Roco’s original post in early July. I could feel the excitement about a new series that was going to be dramatic (a girl struggling with herself, and with her given adversaries who she does not choose herself), and dark (see the early promos of scenes in night and rainy weather). I would find it hard if anyone feels the drama has lived up to the original promos. The show has gotten much lighter and the conflict has gotten much less serious. (I think it started with that childish bathroom sex scene in the second episode.) I am curious if others share these kind of thoughts.

“Alias”, pound for pound, was the best show ever created for TV in my opinion, and why the plug was pulled after 4 seasons rivals the mystery of where Jimmy Hoffa is buried.

I would have given my blessing to NBC buying the rights to “Alias” and putting it back on it’s pedestal where it belongs. Failing that, I can fully understand NBC’s desire to conjure up the new “Alias”, knowing how badly we needed it. This, along with my crush on Michelle Ryan, is why I got in line to watch “Bionic Woman”.

Unfortunately, BW has so far proven itself unworthy to wash Jack Bristow’s underwear. “Alias” charged out of the gate like an angry bull and the first 3 seasons had nary a weak episode. Season 4’s self-contained eppies reaked of NETWORK INTER-FREAKING-FERENCE, and then, as Bob Dylan would say, one day the axe just fell.

Fast forward 2 years and NBC gives us “Chuck”. I admit that I watch “Chuck”. It’s not an “Alias” replacement, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t cute. What bothers me is that “Chuck” contains more “Alias” DNA than BW ever thought of having. That is somebody’s fault. I don’t know if it’s NBC’s fault or David Eick’s fault, but somebody is to blame here. Hell’s bells, “Chuck” even has more continuity from one eppie to the next than BW has.

So the deal today is we anxiously hold out for confirmation of a January re-launch and, if there is a God, a complete reboot in BW’s mission statement. If NBC was trying to create their own “Alias” as McKeon suggests, then the least they could have done was INSIST that the BW braintrust sit down in front of a TV and watch all 4.77 seasons of “Alias”, and then they might have some sort of feel for what a kickass girl heroine show can accomplish. Is it too late for that now? Well, the first 8 eppies haven’t been as good as the worst eppie of “Alias”, so I would say that this hiatus is the perfect time for Eick and company to buy the Rambaldi Box Set and settle in for some righteous television, and then relaunch with a brand new plan. They won’t get 5 chances at this. They’ll be lucky to get 2.

NBC’s silence is deafening! Scarey to think that the decision over whether or not to continue with BW rests in the hands of one man or woman. Let’s hope that the NBC boss is a fan of the show..or that s/he believes in 2nd chances!
Cheers for that link Gary, on the face of it those ratings seem ‘OK-ish’, but this Nielsen business makes it less straight forward.
Jim, you’ve reminded me of all those posts I made way back when, and you know, it’s so strange comparing what I THOUGHT the show would be, to the show which is now eight ‘average’ episodes deep! From my point of view you’re absolutely right – it’s a completely different show than I anticipated, and I’m not just talking about the flaws, but the actual ‘build’, ‘tone’ and ‘ethos’ of BW seems so far removed from the “dark” and “edgy” and “thematic” show which was touted. Like you, I expected the show to be more dramatic and emotionally draining, I expected to be presented with ’shade of gray’ themes which Jaime and the other characters would encounter on an episode to episode basis. As you mentioned, the show is actually less ’serious’ than it was hyped to be. Now I don’t mind a bit of light…but I need the shade too, and so far it seems that the passing of the show from one showrunner to the next has diluted the original (and rather powerful) outlook. What is strange is that only the Pilot (and maybe “Sisterhood”) has come close to delivering the conflicted and ‘edgy’ issues that I hoped for. That’s not saying the show can’t bring it back round – as Page 48 suggests, we need a FULL SYSTEM REBOOT. NBC need to know where they’re going – do they want another Alias? Heroes? Do they want to throw in a little BSG? LOST? Ultimately I think they need to link the episodes together. Page 48, it also worries me that Chuck has better continuity than BW – surely a (’serious’?) show like BW is crying out for the episodes to relate to each other! They also need to make the audience invest in the characters – I mean how many people cared when Will died, or when Antonio died? Heck, even Jaime didn’t care..how do they expect US to care? I don’t want to make it sound like I’m attacking the show, as I’d much rather have Team Eick rethink and rebuild the Bionic Woman, you know..better, faster, stronger..
We await news NBC!

I had forgotten that the show looked so intriguing precisely because it was so dark! It’s like the showrunners wanted to be edgy, but they’re much better at fluff. There’s so much in there that’s good, but the overall product is incoherent. Great blog – I hope they keep giving you things to write about!

That’s the thing, Liz – it’s like they were afraid to make it too ‘edgy’, or perhaps they thought the viewers would take better to light-hearted ‘fluff’. I wish they stuck to the ‘dark’ premise because that is what made me want to start blogging about the show. You’re right, there’s still alot of potential in the show, I hope they start over from scratch – IF given the opportunity. Thanks for the compliment (and for your interesting article), I sure hope I’ll still have something worth blogging about..if not, then my Lost blog will get my full blogging attention! lol :P
