Exactly, I don’t get that statement about Michelle Ryan being “miscast”. Also they gave little evidence to back it up!
I would expect them to care about the Canadian ratings – as you said it’s filmed in Canada. I guess NBC have their own criteria for ’success’.
Hey Hood, I think you offer a very fair reflection on the standard of both the writing and Michelle Ryan. Whilst the overall quality of writing has been inconsistent, Ryan has indeed done a ‘good’ job. She hasn’t been spectacular but she’s certainly held her own and has been making a marked improvement – as you mention, her lasted performance in episode 1.05 was very good, as was the writing.
Regarding the accent, personally I do think that using her ‘native tongue’ in those scenes did help her performance, but I also accept that she has done a fine job with the American accent.

Likewise, I have seen many recent articles saying that Michelle Ryan is miscast yet only providing comments on the inconsistencies of the character of Jamie Sommers. I think this is brutally unfair on the actress as everything they are saying is clearly the fault of the writers yet they still collude to blame her. Personally I think that she has done a decent job with what she has been given. In the last episode her character was properly written and Michelle Ryan gave a much improved performance. I don’t believe that the accent is the reason either as I found her to be just as charming at the beginning and end of the episode when she was in “American” mode.

I read that article the other day and I wondered how the writer concluded that Michelle Ryan was “miscast” in the lead role. I don’t see the logic in that statement.

As far as “performing well in Canada”, unfortunately I believe Canadian viewership is irrelevant as far as ratings are concerned, which seems like an injustice IMO. The show is produced in Canada and yet our Canadian eyeballs don’t count when the decision is made to cancel or renew. It ain’t right I tells ya.

“Gossip Girl” doesn’t bear thinking about.
